Goals and Growth

We often talk about growth as a staff and the importance of it as we pursue excellence. This week we want to share some of these same thoughts with our students. We want to remind them of the power of the word "yet" and that they are continuing to grow and get better each and every day. This week they will have the opportunity to set goals and achieve with spring MAP testing. It is powerful to have conversations about a growth mindset and maybe even allow them some time to reflect on the growth they have experienced so far this year. Maybe they can now recall all of their basic facts. Maybe they can play the recorder or read five chapter books. Whatever that looks like, let's take some time to share with our kids the power of setting, achieving, and celebrating goals and growth. I have included some images that you can share to let them know we believe in each one of them!

Celebrations at PVES:

We were definitely feeling lucky this last week to have each of you as a part of our PVES staff! We hoped you had fun looking for shamrocks last week. Congratulations to our winners! Below were our final two winners for the week. Thank you again for participating and having some fun with us!

Our induction teachers had a meeting this past Tuesday where they focused on learning more about the 4.0 rubric and hearing from State Teacher of the Year, Amy Carter. Pictured below is a group of volunteers who participated in an activity Ms. Carter had in her presentation. Mr. Richard and Mrs. Arnold are in the group and represented PVES well!

Our sensory path has been a huge hit with our students. Check out these two videos that showcase the first morning and our expectations. We appreciate our PTSO helping to make this happen for our students!

Thank you to Ms. Lee for her work with our students on Leadership 101 skills. They are finishing up the characteristics of a leader and creating these posters to place around the school. This fourth nine weeks is a great time to challenge our students to be leaders and be excellent in all they say and do.

Congratulations to Mr. Little and our PVES Archery Team! They finished fourth in their tournament this weekend. The team total was 2561 points about 200 points higher than the last tournament. The top scorer was Cooper Plowden with a 236. The top female archer was Bellamy Skinner with a 209. The overall winner for the boys at the tournament was 255 and the girls was 245. Some of them will be traveling on March 29th to the state tournament. We wish them the best of luck.

The PVMS band came and performed for our students during arrival last week. They also shared with our fifth-grade students about opportunities to participate in the band in sixth grade. Thank you to Mrs. Fitch for coordinating this and for sharing her love of music.

Need to Know Information for PVES:

MAP Testing: Students will be participating in spring MAP testing this week. This is an exciting time to see our students shine and show all they have learned. All classes except for our first third-grade related arts group can begin MAP testing after announcements on Tuesday and Wednesday. Teachers, please take some time to stress the importance of working hard, doing their best, taking their time, and showing work on math MAP. Think of ways that you as a class can celebrate the growth and success of achieving goals. (This should not impact grades in any way.) We will complete reading on Tuesday and math on Wednesday. Students should leave iPads at school on Monday and Tuesday to prepare for testing.

Setting Up MAP: Remember to make sure that all students who should receive oral accommodations have these assigned. Reach out to an administrator, Melissa Thomas, or special education teacher if you need assistance. HERE is a video to assist with setting up testing. Be sure to assign the test and create your sessions before the actual administration.

Grades and Report Cards: The end of the third nine weeks period is Tuesday, March 22. All grades are due by 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 24th. Verifications will be sent to teachers on Friday, March 25th. Be sure to carefully review these and let Ms. Patty know if you see any issues. Homeroom teachers need to include comments for behavior under "homeroom" and include a statement for students who receive accommodations. If you have questions about this please reach out to an administrator. Grades will be stored on Monday, March 28th. No changes can be made at this point. Report cards will be emailed to parents on Tuesday, March 29th at 4:30 pm.

Thriving Thursday: We will not have Thriving Thursday this week. This will allow teachers to finish MAP testing with any students who need additional time. We will have Thriving Thursday on 3/31 and 4/7. We only have five Thriving Thursdays for the remainder of this school year.

Cafeteria Transition: This week all classes will be transitioning back to eating in the cafeteria and operating on our normal schedule. Homeroom teachers, please take some time to review the expectations of the cafeteria during your morning class meeting on Monday. It may even be helpful to build in some time to show your students the table they will sit at and remind them we will not be skipping seats. Teachers are reminded that the time on the schedule is when you should be in the cafeteria.  We discussed these during our staff meeting on Wednesday of last week but you can find there below as well. Please be patient during this transition week as we work to ensure that all students and staff members have seats.

  • We do not save seats or exclude people from seats. Hands to yourself and respect personal space.
  • Students do not talk while the music plays whether seated or in line. This assists with the volume and helps our cafeteria staff be able to hear students.
  • Students are allowed to go through the line one time and should not get up again unless it is time for the class to throw away trash and be dismissed. The teacher should meet the classroom at the trashcan and ask students to walk to and from the trash area.
  • Students who are purchasing snacks need to wait to get the snack when they are checking out at the register. They do not get these and hold them while waiting in line.
  • Students do not need to go to other classes or tables to have conversations, etc.
  • Appropriate voice levels and conversations should take place in the cafeteria. If you would not say it with a teacher sitting there, do not say it at all. Speak kindly and quietly.

End of the Nine Weeks Items: Please make sure that all house points have been entered by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22nd. We will announce our third nine weeks house points winner on Wednesday's morning announcements. We will be celebrating our third nine weeks of Writing Wall of Fame students and Pride Practices on Friday. April 1st. Mrs. Horn will send out templates for teachers to use to type up materials for these two celebrations. Starting the fourth nine weeks period we will be inviting parents to these celebrations and will communicate this via our parent newsletter that will go out on April 1st.
