Culture

"According to Fullan (2007) school culture can be defined as the guiding beliefs and values evident in the way a school operates. 'School culture' can be used to encompass all the attitudes, expected behaviors and values that impact how the school operates."

The school culture for Powdersville Elementary is so unique because it is ours. OURS. In education, there are very few things that we really have control over. We don't have much say in the standards we teach or the students that end up in our classrooms. What we truly do have control over is the culture that we create for ourselves and our students. We may not get to decide what situations are put before us each day, but we are in control of the attitude we have in dealing with it. We have control over how we reflect our beliefs and values in the decisions that we make daily and how we spend every minute with our students. We are in control of our culture. This week, let's take some time to reflect on what we are showing our students we believe and value. What do we show each other that we believe and value? Let's keep pushing ourselves to commit daily to the beliefs and values that make Powdersville Elementary such a special place to be.

A look at what is happening at PVES...

Double the digits meant double the fun on Twin Day. Students and staff all over the school were able to show their #pvespride.

On 2-22-22, we were able to enjoy a Taco Tuesday in the PD room from Moes.

The Woo Hoo wagon made an appearance for all of our teachers for a special treat and our bus drivers for Bus Driver Appreciation Day. Our PTSO works hard daily to support our staff and students.

A few teachers and Mrs. Horn were able to attend Pam Harris at the Furman Consortium for her session on conceptual understanding in mathematics. The session was fantastic and they are working on ways to communicate the information to our staff.

A few third grade teachers were caught making learning fun and engaging for their students by playing spoons that involved matching characters with their character traits cards.

March Madness Challenges

Dreambox Competition - Starting March 1st, all DreamBox lessons, Reflex math facts, and Reflex Green Lights completed will be added up for each class. Mrs. Durham will be tracking this on her end using a spreadsheet and updating the leaderboard outside of her room with the rankings. The competition lasts the entire month of March. Everything completed here at school and at home will count. There will be a winner for each grade level and an overall winning class from the whole school. The prizes will be the same as last year. You can view this Math Madness Announcement slide for further information.

We are excited about having our students push themselves in math. Just a reminder that incentives for any competition should not impact or adjust their grades. We want to ensure that our students' grades reflect their ability to master their grade level standards.

Reading March Madness - Mrs. McGaha has sent information in regards to the calendar of read alouds. You will use the March Madness Presentation that has links to the book for the day and voting.  The read alouds will be Tuesday and Thursday each week. On Tuesday, you will only have a read aloud. On Thursday, you will have a read aloud and then you will vote for the favorite book for that week. When you vote, you will submit 1 class vote for the class favorite.

Students can follow along with March Madness on the display by Mrs. Lee’s office. As winners are determined, students will follow the books through the bracket! I hope this is something that you and your class will enjoy!

Dress Code Reminders
Mrs. Tollison sent an email on Friday in regards to the the dress code. Please review the student and family handbook here. We want to draw special attention to one item that has become an issue. Students are not allowed to wear hats, hoods, or sunglasses in the building unless it is a special day. This is a school-wide expectation and should be consistent throughout the building and in all classrooms. Next week Mrs. Tollison will restate this expectation on our morning announcements for our students. We will also include this in our March parent newsletter. Thank you for your help to be consistent with this expectation in all areas of the school including your classrooms. It is difficult for our students to distinguish between varying expectations, especially when this is a school-wide expectation.

SCReady Dates and TDA Field Test - SCReady dates have been set. See below for the future testing dates. We also want to draw attention to something announced in our meetings last week. Our district has been chosen to complete a TDA field test prior to SCReady. We will work to schedule this and get this date out to you soon.

May 10 - ELA Day 1
May 11 - ELA Day 2
May 12 - Math
May 17 - 4th Grade Science

MAP Goal Setting
MAP is coming to a classroom near you, soon! Reading MAP will be administered on March 22nd and math on March 23rd. Now is a great time to get your goal setting sheets back out and start goal setting with your students. You can work to give them specific goals over the next couple of weeks to help them meet their goal. If you need extra copies of the sheet, feel free to print one from here

Upcoming PD
Tuesday afternoon Mrs. McGaha and Mrs. Horn will be hosting a "Build Your Conference Notebook" PD. If you have not done so already, please complete this Google form to RSVP.

We want to also remind you that we will have a Professional Development day on March 14th. This will be held in our building. Mr. McAuliff will be starting our morning off with a session on using Edulastic for CFAs and other formal assessments. We will then complete some work with our professional learning communities.
