The Power of Yet
Some of us have said a few of the phrases above over the past week. We may have also heard our students using these phrases as well. The key to moving forward and pushing ourselves to be better leaders and learners each day is that last word in each phrase...yet! Have we also used that word alongside those phrases? Are we encouraging our students to make this part of their vocabulary as well?
Our students need us to have a growth mindset where we truly believe that our failures today are simply the road to future success. We would never want our students to think their futures are limited to their capabilities as third, fourth, or fifth graders. We should also not allow ourselves to fall captive to our failures and limit our ability to learn and grow. We may not be where we want to be yet, but by working collaboratively to support our students, we truly believe there are no limits to where we can take our students!
A look at some great thing happening at PVES...
We had an amazing time serving our community at Eggs Up Grill. We were able to raise over $1,000 in just one Spirit Night!
Thank you to everyone who volunteered!
Ms. Daniels had a visitor come to her classroom on Friday. Her students were given clues all week and studied therapy dogs to prepare for her arrival.
Mrs. Thomas orchestrated a lunchtime for some of our multilanguage learners to get acquainted with one of our district translators, Gabby. They discuss their day and how even though they may not completely understand or be able to fully communicate their learning or questions yet, they are working to learn different tools to best communicate with their teachers and peers.
Important Information for PVES Staff:
Cognia Update: We cannot thank you enough for your time and effort in helping us work through this process. Please remember that we need any corrections or additions that need to be made by this Wednesday, September 29th. You may want to check your links one more time to ensure they are shareable to "Anyone With the Link Can View."
Book Fair: The Book Fair is back! Please remind your students and parents of the date that you signed up to visit the Book Fair as a class so that they can remember to bring their money. Students will also be given the option to visit the Book Fair in the morning from 7:30-8:00 a.m. or during their recess time if they have a pass from the teacher and they have shown you that they have money to purchase an item.
OLWEUS Training and Start Date: OLWEUS meetings will begin on October 4th. This means that any new to PVES staff members will need to join us for a brief training on Wednesday, September 29th, in the library from 3:15-4:00. Any returning staff members can refresh with this teacher guide and access the first six lessons here . You can also access future resources in this folder. Please be reminded that your OLWEUS meetings should not take your entire PRIDE time. These meetings should end no later than 8:40 like in previous years. This should still allow you time to pull a reading or math intervention group.
Dress Code: Please help us keep consistent expectations in our building. As part of our dress code, we do not allow hoodies in our building for safety reasons. We need to be able to identify who is in the hallways at all times. Students should not be wearing hoodies in the classrooms or the hallways. Thank you for your support with this!
Supervision: We want to make sure our students are supervised while in our care. The restrooms have become an area of concern in regards to student supervision and behavior issues. We want to encourage you to consider utilizing group restroom breaks to help ensure students are supervised and not wandering the halls during your guided reading or math time. Using a group restroom time to spiral concepts with your students waiting in line will help keep supervision at the forefront while also ensuring that students do not miss a longer time in the classroom. We also ask that you limit the students you are sending to the restroom during our dismissal time. We don't want to send a flood of students during our packing up and bus dismissal time. If you see the same student asking to go at the same time each day, please encourage them to go during your group break time or monitor how long they are staying out of your classroom.
Dismissal: Thank you so much for your patience as we have worked out some issues with School Dismissal Manager. You have been flexible and provided feedback which has helped us get dismissal below 25 minutes. This is amazing for the amount of car riders we dismiss!
Since there are times when dismissal will need to be covered for varying reasons, we ask that we have consistent dismissal procedures. While either students or yourself look for their car number, please ensure that all students remain in their seat until it is time for their group to be called. They can then stack their chair and dismiss as needed. Students should also know that their voices should be at a whisper or below to ensure everyone can hear the walkie. This is for safety reasons and to help support the people in the car line who may need to call down to your room for a student. Students can work on homework, Dreambox, Reflex, or read until it is time for them to go. We do ask that if they are on their iPad, you are still monitoring the content that is on their screens.
Writing Wall of Fame & PRIDE Practices: It is getting close to the end of the first nine weeks, which means we will have some celebrating to do on October 22nd after announcements. If you are new to PVES, please refer to the photograph below in regards to choosing a student for the Wall of Fame. We will email out the presentation where you will add in your child's photograph, writing, and why you chose their writing soon, so please be on the lookout as your students turn in their writing pieces.
