Feed the Positive Dog

The rush and adrenaline of the first week have come and gone. Now it is time to get down to the business of developing learners and empowering leaders. What you may find though, is there are challenges and obstacles you did not anticipate. You may feel as though certain things simply cannot be done. Negative thoughts and stress may start to creep into your space. I challenge you to reflect on this insert below from Jon Gordon's The Positive Dog book. Which dog will you feed this week?

Important Need to Know Info for PVES Staff:

House Celebration Week: We will kick off our houses with a celebration week. Remember to encourage your students to support each house by wearing that house's color for the day. We ask that you take a few minutes each morning to share a little about each house. This will allow our students to build an understanding and respect for our house system. Remember we say we are houses divided, school united. You can use these slides found HERE to share about each house. On Friday we will be bringing our third graders in to spin for a house. We will be sending out a schedule and location later this week. Students who are new to PVES will also have an opportunity to spin. We ask that teachers take a moment on Friday to input the new house assignments HERE. Our PTSO will use this to fill house t-shirt orders that parents have placed.

First Fire Drill and Expectations: We will have our first fire drill of the year on Tuesday, August 24th. We will plan to do this between 10:00-10:15 to ensure we have this completed before lunchtime. Please make sure you are aware of your evacuation route and that you have your emergency bag from Nurse Cynthia. You will need to take a class roster, your red/green card, walkie (channel 1), and evacuate the building once you hear the signal (voice and beeping). Teachers will need to be sure to instruct students on these procedures. It is helpful if students move quietly and quickly through the hallways. We can use both sides of the hallways to exit the building. This is timed and we will provide feedback after the event. Thank you for your help and preparedness.

Dismissal Updates: We are continuing to work through our dismissal process. The plan will be to continue dismissing as we did on Friday, see below for a reminder. In the classroom, make sure students are watching for their names, listening to the walkie, and packed up ready to leave when their groups are called. We also ask that students' chairs be placed on top of their desks with their legs up so that custodians can sweep under desks. Thank you for your help!

Bell at 2:40- Bus riders (not P23 second load or Karate)
Walkie will signal- Car riders group 1-4 and Karate bus
Walkie will signal- YMCA and Car riders group 5

Seating Charts: Remember that all seating charts need to be completed and uploaded this week. This is helpful if contract tracing is necessary. Please keep in mind if you are able to spread students out or turn desks in such a way that they are 3 feet apart, no contract tracing will be necessary. If you need assistance we have some great rooms to use as examples, Nurse Cynthia can assist with this.

Cafeteria Expectations: Students did an amazing job on Friday with the cafeteria. Most of our students (2/3) have not had the opportunity to eat in the cafeteria before. It is important for them to know the expectations and review them as needed. I heard many teachers going over these before they entered the cafeteria. Thank you so much for encouraging our students to show #pvespride in the cafeteria. See below for a reminder of the expectations.

  1. Please adhere to your schedule. It may help to set a line-up alarm on your iPad to go to the cafeteria. Remember you need to leave before your assigned time.
  2. Reinforce the music to assist with the noise level. It may be helpful to walk around during that short song to make sure students are following these procedures.
  3. Students do not need to leave their seats. They need to get all items before sitting down this includes water. They do not need to get up to throw away trash until the entire class is dismissed. (We will help with this procedure tomorrow.)
  4. Students do not need to turn around and talk to other students at different tables. This blocks the aisles and does not allow for class cohorting.
  5. Students need to check their areas before lining up and gather any trash.
  6. 4th and 5th Grade Teachers and Arnold- some classes have the same leave time. We are going to assign the class that enters on the left to be the first class to dismiss and line up at the trashcan. When this class leaves the trash area the next class can immediately follow. Please let us know if you have any questions.
